James Shaw b. 1987

James Shaw (b.1987), is a London-based designer who makes objects and furniture. He graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2013 with an MA in Design Products. His work aims to bring out the inherent beauty of diverse materials, often uniting or contrasting handmade and tactile qualities with the structured and systematised. Frequently his work considers the resources around us, challenging the notions of “waste” and "value". Shaw experiments with a range of mediums, including wood and metal, but is probably best known for his work with recycled plastics, producing blobby, gloopy and baroque forms through a self-built extruding gun.

Shaw has exhibited internationally and past awards include being nominated for the Design Museum Designs of the Year Award and winning the Arc Chair Design Award. His work is in the permanent collections of MoMA, The V&A, The Montreal Museum of Art, The Design Museum Ghent and The Museum of London.
